It is LOTS of insects – cicadas to be specific. And it really was that loud.
It is so beautiful. How do they sleep with all that noise??

Yes, our landlord took us up there. We just drove up the mountain, watched the sunset, ate some sugar cane and coconut, and drove back down. It was very cool!
